What is your New Year’s Resolution? (Make 2017 the best year yet with this list of positive ideas!)

The New Year is finally here and during this time many of us find ourselves re-evaluating our life choices and thinking about ways to make improvements to our lifestyles. This is the perfect opportunity to start making those changes you have been putting off for weeks and months. Here is a list resolution ideas I have put together to help get you started.

1. Dedicate time for exercise

Whether your goal is to lose weight or get into shape, exercising will help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. The key is to make it part of your routine and stick to it. Think of ways that will make you enjoy keeping fit such as joining a  Zumba class, swimming and workout DVDs. If you enjoy what you are doing you will notice steady results faster.

2. Meet new people

It’s very easy to get caught up in everyday life. When we get stuck in a rut, we tend to focus most of our attention on work and home, missing out on opportunities to socialise and meet new people. Networking and having fun helps us grow as individuals and definitely makes our lives more interesting. Meeting new people and making new friends is a great way to enhance your confidence and overcome shyness, helping your career and your well-being. Whether it is communicating with the new person at work or reaching out to a friend on social media, go for it!

   3. Don’t stress over little things

Stressing is no good for your health and it can have a destructive effect on all areas of your life, including career and relationships. It could be an unavoidable side effect due to the expectations of our daily routines and our hectic lifestyles, but it can be managed with useful stress management techniques. For good advice and practical ways to reduce stress, read ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff ‘ by Richard Carlson. This book provides strategies for living a more fulfilled and peaceful life.

4. Make sure you get enough sleep

Sleep is important to ensure we remain productive. You should aim for 8 hours sleep a night so that you are well-rested and prepared for the day ahead. Devices such as smartphones, TVs and computers are a distraction, the lighting and alerts will keep you up. To get more quality sleep, switching these gadgets off will help you sleep peacefully.

5. Start saving money

Saving is the best way to ensure that you are self-dependent and have financial security. We work hard enough all year around, we must take care of ourselves and save towards our goals in life. What is it that you want to achieve? We are all working towards something, a house, a car, a wedding, a holiday and the list goes on. Come up with a strategy to help you save more efficiently. You can do this by downloading apps on your smartphone or by creating an excel spreadsheet to document and manage your outgoings.

6. Learn a new language

Learning a new language enables you to gain a new skill and will help you improve your communication skills. Knowing another language is also very much an advantage amongst recruiters and will look great on your CV. There are many resources to help you learn a language in your spare time. Pop to a book shop or you could purchase products such as Rosetta Stone to get you started.

7. Travel more

Travelling is a great way to meet new people and experience different cultures. It enables you to see more of the world and enjoy a break away from your everyday reality. Create a bucket list of the places you want to visit and tick them off as you go along. Try to go to as many of those places as you can each year

8. Learn to let go

Forgiveness is a healthier way to deal with issues rather than holding grudges. Yes you might have your reasons but by holding grudges and being in a bad mood you are only hurting yourself. Let go of what no longer serves you and create a fresh start. Remove all the negativity in your life and focus on the good. Read positive quotes and self-help books to keep a positive outlook and focus on what really matters in your life.

9. Don’t forget to treat yourself

Buy a coffee every morning and buy those shoes you really want. We tend to think twice when it comes to spending on ourselves but would buy for another without thinking. Sometimes you have to put yourself first and take care of your own needs. If you don’t then who will?

10. Spend time with those who really matter

Life is too short to be anything but happy. Spend as much time as possible with your loved ones. Time is ticking away, nobody knows what tomorrow holds. Appreciate your family and friends because tomorrow isn’t promised. Make memories, in the end that’s all we have to hold on to. Take endless pictures and laugh as much as you can as those are the moments you’ll cherish most.
